Though running may seem like a safe sport where injury is not very common, using improper shoes will surely give you problems in the long run.
The repetitive impact of every heel strike may cause wear and tear in your knee and hip joints. Especially if you’re a heavy runner.
One way to prevent this is by using a well cushioned shoe that absorbs the shock in your daily training. Instead of your knee joint receiving the stress of your bodyweight making ground contact, a good shoe will absorb the shock.
The ASICS GEL NIMBUS 23 is one of the daily training favorites of long distance runners.
In this article, we will look at what makes this shoe special and find out why long distance runners love this for training.
Asics Gel-Nimbus 23 Full Review
The Nimbus lineage is one of ASICS’ most loved and most popular neutral shoes for daily training.
It has been in production for 23 years and is only getting better each year.
Unlike most shoes, it has a gender-specific built to compensate for the differences in the musculoskeletal structure and the running biomechanics of men and women.
The women’s version has a higher stack drop to give less stress to the Achilles tendon, has a softer midsole and has different flex grooves to generate smoother transitions during the running gait cycle.
These attention to the smallest scientific detail makes the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 23 one of the favorites in the running shoe market.
But let’s not stop there, let’s see what’s under the hood and talk about its components individually, starting with the upper.
The upper is has an engineered mesh made of lightweight, durable and sustainable materials that helps reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions.
Aside from the fact that choosing this shoe over the others already creates a positive impact on the environment, it also is one of the leading uppers in the market.
It has a well cushioned inner linings that helps with the overall comfort, plus a breathable mesh that helps cool your feet when you run.
Aside from comfort, I also appreciate the reflective materials incorporated in this shoe. It promotes safety and visibility that is perfect for night runners.
The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 23 is technology studded! It has lots of great midsole technology that gives you a great ride overall.
Its soft and light Flytefoam midsole technology helps provide a super soft cushioning without the added weight, which then allowed the ASICS’ to put in more GEL than last year’s model.
The GEL located at the heel helps improve the shock absorption therefore leading to a more comfortable and smoother ride.
Just before the outsole is the Flytefoam Propel technology. It’s an energetic foam that provides a bouncy feel with the help of an elastomer compound.
To add more to the cheesy stuff coming together in its midsole, the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 23 is equipped with a gender-specific TRUSSTIC™ system. It is a stability support system that prevents excessive twisting that could cause an unstable running gait.
These technologies come together to give you a soft, responsive, and energy-efficient ride to help you tackle your day-to-day training with ease and comfort. However, with all these midsole technologies coming together, you can expect it to be a little bit heavy than most shoes.
The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 23 is equipped with a thick rubber outsole that provides good traction even on wet surfaces and tight curves. Plus, its thickness tells us that it will last you a long time.
There’s rarely ever a complaint about the upper of this shoe. It feels soft on the inside and great overall fit.
You’re not gonna experience any hot spots or heel lift with this shoe. It has great lockdown which is almost a guarantee across all ASICS shoe.
I believe this shoe will be able to handle day to day training. As a matter of fact, I believe it to be one of the most durable shoe in the market.
This shoe got the right blend of performance and comfort. Despite being categorized as a neutral shoe, it is fairly stable making it a huge plus.
The ASICS team has great attention to detail and implements all these technologies that are backed by sciences into one great shoe.
I believe this shoe will do exceptionally well in providing you comfort in your day-to-day training. It will be able to handle the work you put in to make yourself a better runner every day. You can’t go wrong with this shoe.

ASICS Gel-Nimbus 23
The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 23 is a soft, smooth, and comfortable ride best for training long distances at an easy pace. Despite the softness, this shoe has a decent bounce that helps propel you forward and conserve your energy on long runs. However, this shoe is heavy and is not recommended for racing as you will quickly feel its weight as soon as you pick up the pace. Nevertheless, I believe that you can’t go wrong with this shoe.
Brooks Glycerin 19
The Brooks Glycerin 19 is a very soft running shoe similar to the GEL-NIMBUS 23 but with a little less weight. It is at the same price point and is a very good alternative to the GEL-NIMBUS 23.
